Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) has announced that the Hercules line outside Pretoria has been declared safe for the movement of passenger trains.

This comes after the line was temporarily closed, leaving morning commuters stranded on Thursday after a freight train derailed at around 23:00 on Wednesday night in Hercules, Pretoria North.

TFR told Freight News that the train had been carrying empty cement carriers when four of its wagons and diesel locomotive derailed.

“There was no impact on freight customers as this is a Prasa network. Several empty wagons derailed on the line. The cause of the incident is being investigated,” TFR said.

Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) spokesperson for Gauteng Lillian Mofokeng earlier said the Metrorail train services operating between Mabopane and Ga-Rankuwa and Pretoria had been temporarily suspended due to the derailment of the freight train.
