Port of Oakland shuts down after longshore worker passes

The Port of Oakland shut down on Tuesday afternoon after a longshore worker passed away.

“We just heard about the passing of a dockworker at the Port of Oakland,” Roberto Bernardo, director of communications at the Port of Oakland, said in an email to Supply Chain Dive. “The Port expresses its deepest condolences to their family and friends.”

All container terminals are currently closed, with no trucks moving in or out, port cameras show. Several terminals also alerted trucking companies they had cancelled shifts all day, according to email alerts seen by Supply Chain Dive.

At least two terminals — Oakland International Container Terminal and Everport Terminal Services — also extended closures through the next day’s daytime shift. Both terminals said in the email alerts they planned to reopen for the evening shift on June 7. TraPac Oakland said operations on Wednesday are still to be determined.

“We are very saddened to advise of a longshoreman passing today,” Oakland International Container Terminal said in its alert. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”
