Kalmar, a Cargotec company, has received a large order from DP World for eight completely electric Kalmar straddle carriers with high-energy batteries for its London Gateway logistics centre.

The order was received in Cargotec’s Q2 2023 order intake, with delivery expected for the second quarter of 2024.

London Gateway is a deep-sea port, rail terminal, and logistics park on the River Thames in the United Kingdom. Through its sustainability plan and Planet Mark accreditation, owner DP World aims to lower the terminal’s environmental effect, and entirely electric equipment is considered an important aspect of the push to increase eco-efficiency by decreasing emissions and noise.

In addition, DP World is to become a carbon-neutral company by 2040 and a net-zero carbon company by 2050.

According to the statement, Kalmar’s equipment and automation solutions are crucial to DP World London operations at London Gateway, with the terminal employing 60 Kalmar ASCs and 40 Kalmar straddle carriers.

Electric straddle carriers powered by high-energy batteries will be able to run for up to four hours. Furthermore, no substantial adjustments to the yard infrastructure are necessary because the charging stations will be positioned in parking areas outside of operating hotspots.

The straddle carriers will also include a standard CCS2 charging interface, which will work with any commercial charging station. In addition, DP World will build two Kalmar FastCharge charging stations in the yard area, which will be used to recharge the machines’ batteries during shifts.
