APM Terminals (APMT) Barcelona has placed an order of four battery Konecranes Noell Straddle Carriers as well as 17 hybrid Konecranes Noell Straddle Carriers in the second quarter of 2023.
APM Terminals turned to Konecranes for low- and zero-tailpipe-emission straddle carriers to assist its Spanish terminal meet its decarbonisation targets while maintaining reliability and efficiency.
APM Terminals has set goals of reducing carbon emissions by 70% by 2030 and reaching net zero by 2040. This will need the use of new and environmentally friendly container handling technology, such as battery straddle carriers.
“The high-performance, reliable, low-emission and zero-tailpipe-emission container handling equipment that APMT has ordered from Konecranes will contribute significantly to achieving their decarbonization targets. We’re especially proud to have APMT as the first company globally to order battery-powered Konecranes Noell Straddle Carriers, and we look forward to working with APMT as we move the container handling industry towards decarbonization,” stated Hubert Foltys, director of Business Line Straddle Carriers at Konecranes.
The four battery Konecranes Noell Straddle Carriers, which will be delivered in the third quarter of 2024 and will include two automated charging stations, will hold containers 1-over-3 high with twin-lift capabilities.
For intelligent machine deployment and uninterrupted work shifts, APMT will use Konecranes “out of operation” battery charging approach. The 17 hybrid Konecranes Noell Straddle Carriers will likewise be twin-lift, stacking 1-over-3, and will be delivered from the end of this year to the beginning of 2024.
